Vinyl Flooring for Bathrooms: UK Guide
Vinyl flooring is ideal for bathrooms due to 100% waterproof construction, warm underfoot feel, and resistance to mould.
Vinyl flooring suits bathrooms because it's 100% waterproof, resists mould, and stays warm underfoot. Choose LVT (luxury vinyl tile) for realistic wood/stone look (£20–40 per m²) or sheet vinyl for budget bathrooms (£10–18 per m²). Both handle shower splashes and floor puddles without damage.
Why vinyl for bathrooms?
Vinyl wins in bathrooms because:
- Waterproof: Vinyl doesn't absorb water (unlike laminate which swells)
- Warm: Softer and warmer underfoot than ceramic tile
- Mould-resistant: Smooth surface, no grout lines for mould to grow
- Slip-resistant: Textured finish available for wet areas
- Easy to clean: Wipe with damp mop, no special products needed
LVT vs sheet vinyl for bathrooms
LVT (click or glue-down): Realistic wood or stone appearance, easier to replace damaged sections, £20–40 per m². Best for bathrooms where aesthetics matter.
Sheet vinyl: Sold in rolls, fewer seams (less water ingress risk), cheaper (£10–18 per m²), faster to install. Best for budget bathrooms or very small spaces.
Both are equally waterproof. LVT looks better, sheet vinyl is more practical for wet rooms.
Installation over existing tiles
You can install vinyl over existing bathroom tiles if:
- Tiles are firmly adhered (no loose or hollow-sounding tiles)
- Surface is level (grout lines create minor ridges but that's acceptable)
- Floor is clean and dry
Click LVT: lay underlay over tiles, then click planks together.
Sheet vinyl or glue-down LVT: apply levelling compound over tiles first to create smooth surface, then glue vinyl.
Around toilets and sinks
Cut vinyl to fit around toilet base and pedestal sink. Leave 2–3mm gap, seal with clear silicone (prevents water seeping under vinyl).
For toilets, either:
- Remove toilet, install vinyl, reinstall toilet on top (cleanest finish)
- Or cut vinyl to fit around toilet base, seal gap with silicone (easier but visible join)
Cost for typical UK bathroom
5m² bathroom:
- Budget sheet vinyl: £50–90 materials + £60–100 labour = £110–190 total
- Mid-range LVT click: £100–160 materials, DIY-able = £100–160 total
- Premium glue-down LVT: £150–250 materials + £80–120 labour = £230–370 total
Maintenance
- Wipe up water after showers
- Mop weekly with pH-neutral cleaner
- Check silicone seals annually, re-seal if cracking
- Avoid bleach-based cleaners (can discolour vinyl)
Lifespan: 15–25 years for LVT, 10–15 years for sheet vinyl.
